Sense making in a wild world.

“What’s really going on?”

For over 20 years, this has been the question that has been at the heart of my work and life.

I work with individuals, teams and organisations to help them navigate change - and a changing world - and create something greater.

It’s the often messy, sometimes daunting and always expansive work of uncertainty, possibility and the unknown, as we move towards something meaningful, tangible and real.

Roll up your sleeves, and make some tea - I’ll bring the lantern.

Coaching is a collaboration between the two of us, a relationship focussed specifically on your growth. It’s a space to explore who you are and how to move towards what you really want.

I help people to get clear on a bold vision for their future & to realise it through their own development. I sometimes describe my approach as journalistic, always broadening & deepening your awareness whilst moving closer to the truth.

Coaching is a journey for the spirited, adventurous and ambitious, one to find out who you really are and lead your life more fully.

Consulting is an elaborate label to describe something quite simple: helping organisations to change by overcoming challenges. I’ve been doing this work in various forms since 2005, in organisations ranging from governments and global corporates to startups & scale-ups

My time as a consultant has included stints at large consulting firms (including Big 4), boutique advisors and now over a decade as an independent consultant. I am most interested in how organisations successfully navigate the challenges of changing and growing - particularly the intersection of people, culture, leadership and technology. What I enjoy most is helping organisations to move from uncertainty and possibility to a clear course of action and the confidence to pursue it.

    • Strategic direction: getting clear and confident about the future;

    • Team performance & dynamics: enabling to teams to build trust, navigate conflict and strengthen relationships;

    • Leadership culture: working with leadership teams to align on mission and operate more effectively;

    • Training & offsites: designing and delivering workshops & developmental experiences that are engaging, insightful and playful;

    • Effective communication: experiential training in communicating with greater honesty, trust and impact.

  • I’ve consulted with and for a range of organisations including:

    • NHS

    • Barclays

    • HSBC

    • Deloitte

    • Deloitte Legal

    • Met Police Service

    • Welsh Assembly Government

    • Lloyds Bank

    • Office for National Statistics

    • PA Consulting Group

    • BCS Consulting (now Accenture)

    I am also part of Extra Brain, a collective of independent consultants with diverse skills, who support SME organisations by providing exactly what they need to solve a problem.

  • Fees are typically charged on a day rate or fixed price, depending on the scope of work & what we need to achieve.

“Organisations run on many visible systems: strategy, structure, technology, incentives, performance metrics, governance frameworks, and compliance protocols. These form the formal skeleton of collective life. Yet none of them function properly without something far less visible and far more fragile: trust.”

Facilitation is the practice of creating settings in which groups of people can form their own powerful insights and shared knowledge. Hidden in groups of people is a collective wisdom, one that can be surfaced through the cultivation of deeper connection and trust.

I’ve been facilitating groups of people, in various forms, since 2006. As a consultant, this was usually driven by a need to gather information, share knowledge and enable teams & groups to co-create something (a vision or plan, for example).

Over time, I have become more focused on enabling people to surface what needs to be expressed - the unspoken thoughts, feelings and ideas that allow for a deeper understanding of what is really happening and the emergence of shared meaning & trust within a group.

My facilitation practice is strongly influenced by my training in Way of Council. This is a form of group dialogue that draws on long-standing wisdom traditions and has been used in a range of contemporary settings around the world, from corporate boardrooms & executive teams to high-security prisons and schools.

This practice also sits at the heart of the men’s groups I’ve been facilitating since 2021.

Clients I’ve facilitated with include: Zalando, Mastercard, Extra Brain, Met Police Service, Barclays Capital, and Leader Brother Son.

“The meeting went on, until it finally seemed to stop for no reason at all and the group dispersed. Yet after that, everybody seemed to know what to do, because they understood each other so well.”

Storytelling is the best vehicle to express what is most essential, powerful & insightful in the human experience. I believe that stories and the ability to tell them are the key to creating meaning & connection.

Stories have been my first love ever since I first walked into a public library as a 5-year old. Throughout my work, whether with individuals or with organisations, I’ve come to realise the extraordinary power of creating and telling meaningful stories.

Stories counteract our overly linear and logical lens on the world, inviting us to see the world as narrative and symbolism, with all the nuance and subjectivity that is the foundation of sensemaking.

I’ve been writing for many years, most frequently with my two newsletters as well as various essays & blogs elsewhere. Along the way, I’ve trained in various places, including graduating from the Faber Academy in 2013.

Public speaking is also part of my work, from in-person corporate events to private gatherings & webinars.

Clients who have engaged me for speaking & storytelling include: HSBC, Mastercard, Zalando, Genomics England, FemTech Lab, Plinc, Womxn for Climate Tech & Innovation, & Brewing Minds.

To explore some of my writing & thinking, you can subscribe below to my personal newsletter, where I write short essays every week, and my longer essays on men & masculinity.

“The business of stories is not enchantment.

The business of stories is not escape.

The business of stories is waking up.”

— Martin Shaw

Projects… some of the other things I’m working on.

Where Have All The Flowers Gone? is a small publishing platform, focussed on perspectives from contemporary men. We’re publishing our first anthology, Fathers, in summer 2026. It was co-founded with Al Kennedy.

Forward Together is an initiative to bridge divided communities in the UK through group dialogue and facilitation. It was successfully piloted in north-east England in January 2026; we are currently seeking funding to expand our work to other towns and cities. It was co-founded with Dave Bingham.

Wild Twin is a creative collective that draws on old and new wisdom to shape richer & more meaningful stories about men & masculinity. We work primarily with creative organisations, offering them new perspectives and insights about masculinity to inspire their creative process, storytelling and the stories they tell about men. It was co-founded in 2025 with my wife, Lucy Dale.

Leader Brother Son was founded in 2020 to create spaces for men to discover expressions of masculinity that serve them and the world around them. We offer open weekly groups and also work inside organisations to create spaces for men, including ongoing groups, programmes and workshops. It is co-led by Russell Larrett.

About me.

I have spent over two decades working at the intersection of leadership, culture and organisational change. I have led teams, run programmes, built organisations and, more than once, got things badly wrong. I have also been lucky enough to work alongside remarkable people who were willing to be honest about what was hard.

Over time, I became less interested in frameworks and more interested in depth - in what actually shapes how people lead, decide and relate. That interest took me beyond consulting, into coaching, writing and the various practices and projects I’m involved in now.

The ideas and practice gathered here are the result of that accumulation. They are offered not as a system, but as an orientation.

A man with dark hair and a beard, wearing a navy blue sweatshirt and jeans, leaning against a wall in front of a black background, looking to his left.

There are conventional and unconventional aspects to my training and experience.

I have a Masters degree in Finance and BA in Retail Marketing. I'm a certified coach with various human development trainings. I've worked with therapists, psychoanalysts, mentors & supervisors as part of my ongoing development. I’ve worked in numerous corporates & organisations.

Less conventionally, I have worked with shamans, psychedelic guides, and various indigenous and spiritual traditions. This includes Way of Council Vision Quest, Shambhala Buddhist teachings and & nature-based experiences.

I’m originally from the UK, born in the East Midlands to Indian parents. After living and working around the UK, and 19 years in London, I now live in Berlin with my wife and son.

Beyond work, my life is centred around my family, creative practices, adventure travel, football, cycling, music, film and literature.

Why the name? The Selfish Leader is a provocation. Not a licence for narcissism, but an orientation around a different kind of priority.

The best leaders I have encountered invest seriously in themselves — their inner lives, their self-knowledge, their capacity to hold complexity without collapsing it. This is the foundation for being genuinely useful to others. You cannot give what you have not first found in yourself.

In a world that rewards busyness, external action and the appearance of certainty, the act of turning inward is countercultural. Yet it is there that our outer lives emerge from.

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
